What Each Material Is Made Of

SPC versus laminate is one of the most searched flooring comparisons — and it’s also one where the names create real confusion. They look similar, install similarly, and are often displayed side by side in showrooms. But their core construction is completely different, and that difference determines everything about how they perform over time.

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) has a core made from limestone powder mixed with PVC. That combination creates a rigid, extremely dense plank that is 100% waterproof. The stone content adds weight and stability, making SPC highly resistant to denting and dimensional changes caused by temperature or humidity swings.

Laminate flooring has an HDF (high-density fiberboard) core — essentially compressed wood fiber. That core is then topped with a photographic layer and a protective clear coat. The problem is that HDF is wood-based, which means it absorbs moisture. Even “waterproof” laminate products have an HDF or modified HDF core that can swell or fail if water gets underneath or into the seams.


Moisture Resistance — The Critical Difference

SPC is genuinely waterproof. The limestone-PVC core does not absorb water under any conditions. You can flood an SPC floor and come back the next day — as long as the water doesn’t get underneath to the subfloor, the planks themselves will be fine.

Laminate is not waterproof — even products marketed as “water-resistant” or “waterproof laminate.” The surface finish resists immediate surface spills, but the seams between planks are vulnerable. If water sits on the surface, seeps into the joints, or enters from underneath due to subfloor moisture, the HDF core swells and the boards deform permanently. In Florida, that swelling doesn’t require a spill — ambient humidity alone can cause it over time in rooms without adequate climate control.


Durability and Lifespan

In a controlled environment, quality laminate can last 15–25 years. In Florida’s humidity, that lifespan shortens significantly — most laminate installations in Tampa start showing signs of moisture stress within 5–10 years, sometimes less.

SPC, because it doesn’t react to moisture, maintains its structural integrity over a much longer period. Well-installed SPC in a Florida home realistically lasts 20–30 years. The wear layer on top protects the surface from scratches and scuffs, and the core stays stable regardless of humidity levels.

SPC is also more resistant to denting than laminate. The stone content in the core absorbs impact better than compressed fiberboard, which makes SPC a better choice in high-traffic areas or homes with heavy furniture.


Comfort and Sound Underfoot

Laminate has a slight edge here. The HDF core gives laminate a bit more natural cushion underfoot — it feels slightly softer and warmer than SPC. It also absorbs sound better in its standard form.

SPC is denser and harder, which makes it feel more rigid underfoot. Most SPC products come with an attached underlayment pad that compensates for this, adding back some cushion and sound dampening. If you’re installing SPC without attached underlayment, adding a separate pad is worth the cost.

For most homeowners, the comfort difference between quality SPC with underlayment and laminate is minimal in daily use. The moisture performance gap, however, is not minimal — which is why the comfort trade-off rarely changes the recommendation in Florida.

Laminate is typically cheaper than SPC — both in materials and installation. Entry-level laminate can be found for $1–$2 per square foot in materials; SPC starts around $2–$3. The installed cost difference is usually $1–$2 per square foot when comparing equivalent quality levels.

Installation: How SPC and Laminate Differ in Practice

Both SPC and laminate use a click-lock floating installation system — planks lock together without glue and float over the subfloor without being permanently attached. This makes both materials faster to install than tile and accessible for DIY installation in some cases. But there are meaningful differences in how installation goes in practice.

Subfloor requirements: Both materials require a flat, clean subfloor — typically within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. SPC is slightly more forgiving of minor subfloor imperfections because its dense core bridges small dips and bumps better than laminate’s HDF core. Laminate is more sensitive to subfloor movement, which matters in Florida where subfloor wood can shift seasonally with humidity changes.

Underlayment: Many SPC products come with underlayment pre-attached to the back of each plank. This simplifies installation and ensures consistent sound dampening and cushion. Laminate also frequently includes attached underlayment, but if it doesn’t, a separate underlayment layer needs to be installed first — adding time and cost.

Acclimation: SPC requires minimal acclimation — most manufacturers recommend just 24 hours in the installation space. Because of its inorganic core, it doesn’t change dimensionally with temperature or humidity in a way that requires extended adjustment. Laminate, with its wood-based core, benefits from 48–72 hours of acclimation in the room before installation, giving the planks time to adjust to the local humidity level before being locked together.

Expansion gaps: Both materials need expansion gaps at walls and fixed objects to allow for minor dimensional changes with temperature swings. SPC gaps are typically smaller because the material is more stable. In Florida homes with significant AC cycling — cold interiors versus hot outdoor temperatures — SPC’s dimensional stability means the expansion gap requirements are less of a concern long-term.

Is SPC the same as LVP?

SPC is a subcategory of luxury vinyl. All SPC is LVP, but not all LVP is SPC. Standard LVP has a flexible PVC core; SPC has a rigid stone-plastic composite core that is denser and more stable. SPC is generally considered the premium version — better for temperature-variable environments like Florida homes that cycle between heat and heavy air conditioning.

Can laminate be installed in a Florida bathroom?

It is not recommended. Even waterproof-labeled laminate products are not reliable long-term in high-moisture environments like bathrooms. The seams remain a vulnerability point, and Florida’s humidity compounds the risk. Porcelain tile or LVP are the appropriate choices for Florida bathrooms.

Does SPC look like real wood?
